About Multisport Events

Ottawa Kids triathlon multisport events are intended to provide youth aged from 5 and Under to 16-19 with the unique opportunity of experiencing the sport in a positive and safe yet fun environment.
These multisport events include swimming, biking, and running for a triathlon and running, biking and running in a duathlon over shorter distances than those competed in by adults. Most children in each age group find the distances challenging but fair.
The age groups are 5 and Under, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-19 based on the age of the child at the end of the current year.

Some of the basic Rules.

All participants must wear approved helmets on the bicycle course.
Chinstraps must be fastened before removing the bike from the bike rack. Chinstraps must remain fastened until the bike has been returned to the bike rack.
Participants must rack their bikes in its original position in the transition area.
Torsos must be covered during the bike and run. Drafting on the bike course is not permitted.
Participants and parents must conform to the rules of fair play and good sportsmanship.
Parental or coaching assistance is not permitted on the race course or in the transition area once the race has begun. Any outside assistance may result in immediate disqualification.
The Official may disqualify a participant who is in direct violation of the rules.
Athletes are not permitted to race up an age category.

Pedals

Cages will not be allowed at any age. Clipless Pedals will be allowed at any age but only SPD type pedals will be allowed for athletes under the age of 14. The cleats on the bike shoes must be recessed in the tread to allow the athlete to walk without slipping. Pedals need not be double sided. Athletes 14 or older may use "Look-type" pedals and shoes.

Spokes

Minimum number is now 16

Wheels

14 and older athletes will be allowed wheels with a maximum rim depth of 60mm (Zipp 404's are 58mm); maximum rim depth for athletes under the age of 14 is 25mm.

Aerobars

In draft legal races (limited to qualified 14-15 and 16-19 age groups) only draft legal aerobars will be allowed ie may not extend beyond the brake levers and must be bridged; in non-drafting situations - either type of aerobar will be permitted in Ontario.
